Root canal treatment

If you have severe toothache, sensitivity to hot or cold, or swelling around the gums, you may need root canal treatment. It treats infection or damage inside the tooth (the pulp) and aims to save your natural tooth.

At our clinic in Hopton, Great Yarmouth, we diagnose the problem, explain your options and support you from treatment through to recovery.

Signs you may need a root canal

  • Persistent tooth pain
  • Sensitivity to hot and cold
  • Swollen or tender gums
  • Darkening of the tooth
  • A pimple-like swelling on the gum

What is root canal treatment?

The infected or damaged tissue is removed, the inside of the tooth is cleaned and shaped, and the canals are filled and sealed to help prevent further infection.

Healing timeline

  • First 1 to 2 days: some mild discomfort or sensitivity is normal
  • Around 1 week: the surrounding tissues settle
  • Several weeks: the area continues to heal
  • Follow-up (2 to 4 weeks): your dentist checks how the tooth is healing

Step by step

What to expect

These steps are a guide. Your own plan may differ, and your dentist will explain everything before you decide.

    Examination and x-rays

    We examine the tooth and take x-rays to see the extent of the problem.

  2. 2

    Local anaesthetic

    The area around the tooth is numbed so you're comfortable.

  3. 3

    Cleaning

    The infected or damaged pulp is removed and the canals are cleaned.

  4. 4

    Filling and sealing

    The canals are filled, usually with a rubber-like material called gutta-percha, and sealed.

  5. 5

    Restoring the tooth

    The tooth is restored with a filling or crown. A crown is often recommended to strengthen it.

  6. 6

    Follow-up

    We may see you again to check the tooth is healing well.
