Dental crowns
A crown is a custom-made cap that fits over the whole of a weakened tooth. It can cover cracks, decay and discolouration and strengthen a root-treated or heavily filled tooth.
Crowns can be made from a range of materials and can also support a dental bridge or sit on a dental implant. Our team will help you choose the right option for your tooth, your preferences and your budget.

What is a dental crown?
A crown (or cap) is a fixed shell that covers the entire outer surface of a tooth. It is shaped to look and work like your natural tooth and is cemented firmly in place.
Crowns are used to restore damaged teeth, improve the shape or colour of a tooth, protect a tooth after root canal treatment, anchor a bridge, or complete a dental implant.
Crown materials
We'll talk you through the options, including:
- Porcelain: a natural appearance
- Ceramic (such as Emax): durable and natural-looking
- Gold and metal alloys: known for strength
- Porcelain fused to metal: combines the strength of metal with the look of porcelain
Onlays
If a tooth doesn't need a full crown, an onlay may be suitable. It covers part of the biting surface and keeps more of your natural tooth.

Caring for your crown
- Some sensitivity for a few days is normal. Avoid very hot or cold food and chew on the other side for a while
- Brush and clean between your teeth so the gum around the crown stays healthy
- Avoid chewing ice and very hard foods, which can crack crowns
- If you grind or clench your teeth, ask about a splint or night guard
- Keep up regular check-ups so we can check the crown's fit
