Porcelain veneers

Porcelain veneers are thin, custom-made shells of ceramic bonded to the front of the teeth. They can improve the appearance of discoloured, chipped, worn, gappy or slightly uneven teeth.

Each veneer is made to suit the colour and shape of your teeth. If you're comparing options, see also our page on composite veneers.

Veneers may be an option if you have

  • Stained or discoloured teeth
  • Chipped or worn teeth
  • Gaps between your teeth
  • Slight misalignment

What are porcelain veneers?

They are thin covers made from porcelain and bonded to the front surface of your teeth. Porcelain reflects light in a similar way to natural enamel and resists staining.

Veneers usually need some enamel to be removed, though less than for a crown. A consultation will help decide whether veneers are the right choice for you.

Benefits to discuss with your dentist

  • A natural-looking appearance
  • Resistance to staining from tea, coffee, red wine and smoking
  • Long-lasting with good care
  • Less tooth removal than a crown
  • Can address several cosmetic concerns in a few appointments

Step by step

The porcelain veneer journey

These steps are a guide. Your own plan may differ, and your dentist will explain everything before you decide.

  1. 1

    Consultation

We discuss your goals, check your dental health and agree a personal plan.

  2. 2

    Tooth preparation

The tooth surface is gently reshaped to make room for the veneer.

  3. 3

    Impressions

Precise impressions are taken so your veneers can be made to fit.

  4. 4

    Temporary veneers

Temporaries may be placed to protect your teeth while your veneers are made.

  5. 5

    Fitting

Your veneers are bonded in place, then polished and refined.

Aftercare

  • Brush, clean between your teeth and keep up your usual oral hygiene
  • Avoid biting hard objects or foods with veneered teeth
  • Cutting down on coffee, red wine and tobacco helps keep veneers looking their best
  • Have regular check-ups so we can check your veneers
