Edge bonding

A small chip or uneven edge on a front tooth can change the outline of your smile. Edge bonding uses tooth-coloured composite to make focused changes to the biting edge, where it's clinically suitable.

Book an assessment at our clinic in Hopton. We welcome patients from Great Yarmouth, Lowestoft, Bradwell and Belton and will explain whether edge bonding suits your teeth and bite.

Could edge bonding help?

  • Minor chips: rebuild the outline of a tooth edge
  • Uneven edges: subtle adjustments to selected front teeth
  • Short-looking teeth: check whether a modest change in length is suitable
  • Worn teeth: identify the cause of wear before planning treatment
  • Old edge bonding: ask whether polishing or repair could help

What is edge bonding?

Your dentist adds composite resin along the edge of the tooth, then shapes, hardens and polishes it. The shape and shade are planned around your smile and bite.

Edge bonding is a type of composite bonding. It's different from a composite veneer, which covers more of the visible tooth.

If your teeth are wearing down

We first look at possible causes, including your bite and habits such as grinding. Adding composite alone may not solve the underlying problem, and another approach may be recommended.

Step by step

Your edge bonding consultation and treatment

These steps are a guide. Your own plan may differ, and your dentist will explain everything before you decide.

  1. 1

    Consultation

A relaxed chat with your dentist to assess your teeth and answer your questions.

  2. 2

    Planning

We agree the shade, shape and treatment plan, including any preparation your teeth need.

  3. 3

    Preparation

The tooth surface is prepared for bonding.

  4. 4

    Placement

Composite is layered onto the tooth, with each layer hardened by a special light.

  5. 5

    Shaping

The composite is shaped to the agreed outline and your bite is checked.

  6. 6

    Polish

The composite is polished and we explain how to care for your bonding.

Common questions

How much does edge bonding cost?

Your quote depends on how many edges need treatment, the extent of the changes and any work needed first. We explain the treatment and costs at your consultation.

Are payment options available?

Ask our team about the payment options currently available, including interest-free finance for treatment plans (subject to approval). We'll explain the fees before you decide.

Can it treat worn teeth?

Some worn edges may be suitable, but the cause of the wear and your bite need assessing first. Grinding, clenching or more extensive damage can change what we recommend.

How long does bonding last?

Bonding isn't permanent. Composite can stain, chip or wear and may need polishing, repair or replacement over time.

Aftercare and prevention

  • Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and clean between your teeth
  • Avoid biting nails, pens or hard objects with bonded teeth
  • Talk to your dentist about any grinding or clenching
  • Attend regular reviews and let us know if the composite chips, feels rough or affects your bite
